'Mr Baines, the artist who accompanies Dr Livingstone'. From 'The Illustrated News of the World', 27 February 1858.
Thomas Baines (1820-1875), along with naturalist John Kirk, accompanied David Livingstone as part of the explorer's Zambesi expedition (1858-1863).
Baines's paintings were a vital ingredient in the making of Livingstone's book illustrations.
These watercolours have never before exhibited or published, and the loan of them from the Mrs D L Harryhausen 1969 Trust has greatly enhanced our exhibition.

The 'Picturing Africa' exhibition ran from 14 June to 3 November 2013.
