The sessions
These sessions are ideal for teachers and librarians who have attended full workshops in the past.
Choose a visit to one of our three sites in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
As part of your visit, our staff will give you a brief welcome and will help register students before giving them independent study time in the reading rooms. We recommend allowing one to two hours for a visit.
Students should order books themselves in advance of their visit. Watch our how-to guides on YouTube for information on how to request items.
A maximum of 12 pupils can be accommodated for a self-guided visit.
Our locations
Moving Image and Sound Archive at Kelvin Hall, Glasgow
Kelvin Hall is the home of our Moving Image and Sound Archive. The access centre is an interactive space which offers your pupils the opportunity to explore displays and access film and sound collections which reflect life in Scotland and beyond.
George IV Bridge, Edinburgh
The National Library of Scotland at George IV Bridge houses two reading rooms where a wide range of historical and contemporary material can be viewed on request. There are also free exhibitions displaying collections which your group can visit, including our Treasures gallery which showcases the best of the Library's collections.
Maps reading room at Causewayside, Edinburgh
Causewayside is the home of our Maps Reading Room which is open to the public by appointment only. Around two million maps, atlases, cartographic works and more are available to consult, relating to the British Isles and wider world.
