'Circa Instans' is Bateman's response to a Gaelic medical manuscript from the 15th century.
Bateman says:
'My poem is more about my reaction to the manuscript than a translation of it, though I do try to give a flavour of some of its entries ... I contrast the confidence of the scribe's Gaelic translation of Latin (quoting Greek and Arabic doctor) with the marginalised position the language now holds.'
The poem is written in Gaelic, with an accompanying English translation.
