This photograph is one of many hundreds held by the Library in the Tom Weir Archive. They cover many subjects and locations, but there is a focus on wildlife, nature and mountains. Weir used his photographs to illustrate hundreds of articles, books and lectures.
The archive shows how Weir enthused people about the land and wildlife he loved. His diaries, notebooks and flashcards record his knowledge of and passion for the environment. The photographs allow us to view the environment through Weir's eyes.
He wrote "it was the indescribable flashes of Nature that I wanted".
Weir's great love of nature made him a strong advocate for the outdoors. Environmental concerns were common themes in his work, including on his popular television programme, 'Weir's Way' (1976 to 1987).
He was honoured with the John Muir Trust's first Lifetime Achievement Award in 2000 for his work in raising awareness of environmental issues.
