The British government promoted their Dig for Victory campaign by supplying people with colourful recipe cards and booklets. Potato Pete was a stand-out character in the wartime Ministry of Food's public messaging. He starred in his own recipe book, and he featured in cinema advertisements. He even had his own theme song!
The simple recipes in this booklet focus on home-grown produce, and include potato and vegetable pies, potato croquettes, and ideas for potatoes on toast. People were discouraged from frying their potatoes as it was the most expensive way to cook them when fat was scarce.
Alongside Potato Pete, this display features a wide range of publications from the Ministry of Food, showcasing their extensive efforts to change the nation's eating habits during the war.
