Minute Book of the Select Society, 1754 [Library reference: Adv.MS.23.1.1, f.33].
The Select Society was one of the key gatherings of the Scottish Enlightenment.
Founded in 1754 with 15 members, by 1756 the society had over 100 members, including Adam Smith and David Hume.
This minute book records the rules of the Society along with an outline of debate topics.
In December 1754, with David Hume as Chair, the Society discussed the 'condition and treatment of women' but no further information on what was said remains.
