The Battle of Sheriffmuir took place on 13 November 1715, with the Earl of Mar's Jacobite army facing the Duke of Argyll and government troops.
Argyll was fighting an army twice the strength of his, but succeeded in stopping the Jacobites from advancing to Stirling or Edinburgh.
The battle was famously indecisive and both sides claimed victory, though neither remained upon the field of battle. Argyll's forces retreated to Stirling and Mar's to Perth.
