Engraving of act 2, scene 1, from 'The Gentle Shepherd' by Allan Ramsey (Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd, 1802). [Library shelfmark: ABS.1.77.48(1)]
Edinburgh-based publishers Oliver & Co produced an edition of Allan Ramsay's 'The Gentle Shepherd' in 1802.
Ramsey's pastoral comedy was performed as a 'ballad opera'.
This edition of the work comprised musical scores, and boasted seven illustrative plates which had been reprinted from earlier Scottish editions.
Reprinting these plates enabled the firm to sell the 1802 edition at a lower price than previous editions.
