From 'Poems on Various Subjects' by Robert Fergusson (Perth: R Morison & Son, 1788-1789). [Library shelfmark: ALW.9]
Morison's 'The Scotish [sic] Poets' series (1788-1789) included Robert Fergusson's work in two volumes.
Theirs was the first edition to feature a portrait of Fergusson and two illustrations visualising his poetry.
Shown here is a title page illustration, with lines from 'The Similie':
'From the lily he hunted this fly to the rose,
From the rose to the lily again,
Till weary with chasing its motions, he chose,
To leave the pursuit with disdain.'
Opposite the title page is the portrait of Robert Fergusson himself, which helped to establish his status as a classic modern poet.
