'Hogg to Murray' painted by Hugh Buchanan.
Born on a small farm in the Scottish countryside, Hogg fought hard to be accepted into Edinburgh literary society. James Hogg's correspondence with John Murray, Sir Walter Scott and Lord Byron is a fascinating part of the archive.
Hugh Buchanan's painting shows a portrait of Hogg alongside letters between him and his publisher. Also on display was a watercolour showing Hogg's correspondence with his friend Lord Byron.
Visitors to the display could also view Hogg's correspondence with Murray II from 1818 and 1819, alongside Buchanan's paintings.
This item featured in our display, 'Hugh Buchanan paints the John Murray Archive', at the Library from 25 June until 6 September 2015.
