'Cinderella with the white pigeons', an illustration from 'Household stories', by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm (London, 1857). [NLS shelfmark: Cam.2.e.22]
During the Victorian era, steel engravings were still a very popular technique for book illustrations.
Even when they remained black and white, they could be very atmospheric.
This mid-19th century English translation has 140 engravings by Edward Henry Wehnert, such as this one which depicts Cinderella with the white pigeons.
The volume featured in the 'Illustrating the Grimms' display at the National Library of Scotland, which ran from 19 September to 18 November 2012.
