Thistle' by Hugh MacDiarmid, with one of
Frans Masereel's woodcuts.
(Falkland: K Duval and C H Hamilton, 1969)
It was because of Hugh MacDiarmid that Kulgin Duval and Colin Hamilton became fine publishers.
This is Kulgin Duval's own copy of MacDiarmid's best-known work, with an additional set of Frans Masereel's woodcuts.
It was published almost 50 years ago, and to such high aesthetic standards that its appeal is timeless. It was two years in the planning and making.
The attention to detail is chronicled in the related box of correspondence, proofs and samples.
Even the paper on which the work is printed was specially made for this edition.
The text was fully edited by Dr W R Aitken and is the definitive version a seminal Scottish poem.
Hugh MacDiarmid
Kulgin Duval and Colin Hamilton's friendship with Christopher Grieve ('Hugh MacDiarmid') and his wife, Valda Trevlyn, was the most significant and enduring of all their literary relationships. The Grieves were regular guests at Frenich.
Some of Kulgin and Colin's finest publications were of MacDiarmid's work, and their collection of MacDiarmid's books and manuscripts is unrivalled.
