During his African expedition to find the source of the Nile with fellow explorer John Speke, James Grant (1827-1892) made 147 sketches of Eastern Africa.
This watercolour was painted when Grant was held in the Kingdom of Buganda by King M'tessa, who was never seen without his little dog.
