Title page from a first edition of Taverner's Bible, published in London in 1539.
This translation of the Bible in English was named after its editor.
Richard Taverner (1505?-1575) was a famous Greek scholar educated at Oxford. Some London printers invited him to produce a revised version of Matthew's Bible (1537) for publication.
Taverner's revisions were not very extensive, and his version had little influence on the further history of the Bible in English.
