Illustration from 'L'art de bien 'tenir les livres de comptes en parties doubles à L'italienne' by Samuel Ricard (Amsterdam, 1724). [Library shelfmark: ICAS.F69]
This engraving from a French treatise on double-entry bookkeeping depicts a merchant in his counting house.
Behind him is a filing cabinet for his correspondence and other documents.
The list of countries clearly indicates that he had international connections, while the bales show that he dealt in wool, among other commodities.
