A collaborative project with Scotland’s public libraries is under way to preserve fragile early Scottish newspapers.
As part of the 'Scotland's News' project, we have digitised a small selection of the newspapers in our collections.
The initial titles in the digital collection are varied. We have chosen them to support the project by addressing technical challenges, and to help build a sustainable and scalable workflow.
They include early titles like the 'Caledonian Mercury' and the 'Edinburgh Evening Courant'.
Newspaper publishing in Scotland began in earnest in the first half of the 18th century. Those two titles paved the way for the start of a vibrant industry which would go on to support many national and local publications.
We will add more titles to the 'Scotland's News' digital collection as the project progresses.
