The house of John Murray published poetry, novels, scientific, religious and political works, travel writing, biography, periodicals, and educational titles. It continues to publish books today as an imprint of Hodder Headline.
Each generation of the Murray family shaped the business and the types of books it published.
For example, under John Murray II the firm was primarily known for its literary works, especially as the publisher of the poet Lord Byron.
However, his son John III grew Murray's reputation as a publisher of scientific and travel works. In the 20th century the business experimented with new areas of publishing such as educational titles, biographies, adventure stories and books about eastern culture.
