From its foundation in 1768 to its sale to Hodder Headline in 2002 John Murray was a family firm.
Each generation of the family shaped the business and the types of books it published.
From the late 18th century the Murray family preserved their business records, creating a meticulous record of all their publishing activities. Thousands of documents; including correspondence and account books, journals, engravings and photographs, manuscripts and proofs survive because of the care of successive generations.
