Frontispiece from Sir Charles Lyell's 'Principles of Geology', 1830-33 [Library shelfmark: X.149.h].
John Murray published Charles Lyell's three-volume work 'Principles of Geology'. The frontispiece is an illustration of the temple of Serapis at Pussuoli in 1836.
In his book, Lyell argued that the world had not been shaped by unique catastrophes and supernatural events. Instead, he maintained, it had been affected over a long period of time by small, ongoing geological changes.
