Letter to President Abraham Lincoln, 1864. [Library reference H.S.389]
This 1864 note is addressed to President Abraham Lincoln from Charles Eginton, requesting the release of a prisoner of war:
'To his Excellency A Lincoln
President of the US
I respectfully request that John T Price named in this letter of Mr Sargeant may be discharged on taking the oath —

Charles Eginton was a lawyer living in Kentucky in 1864 when he wrote to Lincoln. Other prisoner discharge requests from Eginton to Lincoln are in the National Archives and Library of Congress in the United States.
The note is part of the Library's Hugh Sharp Collection. Sharp (1897-1937) was a wealthy jute manufacturer from Dundee, who collected mostly first editions of classic English and American literature.
