Ottoman sultans and roadside taverns
In this recorded event, Curator Dora Petherbridge explores Henrietta Liston's journals written during diplomatic missions to America and the Ottoman Empire. She introduces Henrietta's fascinating story through her lively observations on society, politics, landscape and people. Leaving Glasgow in 1796, Henrietta travelled thousands of miles — by stagecoach, warship, canoe, carriage, cart and buffalo — before finally retiring to Edinburgh in 1820. Dora reveals the style and character of Henrietta's writing, pinpointing opinion, bias, and wonderment in her work.
